The Rally HQ and start were based at M-Sport, the home of the Ford WRC team. 7 crews had ventured to the most northerly round of the championship and the weekend kicked off with a tour of the M-Sport workshops for registered ST Trophy crews.
Drama started early for one crew at the Cockermouth town centre scrutiny area. The master cylinder on Mathew Baddeley & Phil Kenny's car started leaking fluid into the car from the clutch pedal. The team tried to sort the problem, Mat & Phil even rushing to a local motor factors to find a replacement part but after further inspection decided to throw in the towel and have a day spectating instead.

The weather was going to play an interesting part in the event, heavy rain on the Friday would make the going tough and with overnight temperatures dropping there was a fear of ice. Saturday dawned to snow on the high ground but the temperature was rising so the ice fear was quashed but slushy conditions were going to make the early stages very slippery.

Zak Hughes & Tom Wood were the highest seeded ST crew. As championship leaders they had a target on their backs, and they were going to have to push hard to keep that yellow 'leader' sun strip. The crew went out strong in stage 1 but sadly an overshoot lost them around 10 seconds. Stage 2 was so slippery, and with over a dozen cars retiring in that stage, Hughes decided to be sensible and just get round the 5 miles and keep their nose clean. Stage 3 in Greystoke had better conditions and Hughes pushed hard and topped the time sheets but were in 2nd place heading into the first service, just 3 seconds behind the leaders.

Bobby Mitchell & Shannon Turbull were keen to show 'what could have been' on the opening round in Wales, punctures scuppering any hopes of challenging Hughes for the win there.
Mitchell meant business here in Cumbria and came out of the opening 2.6 mile test with a 4 second lead. Unfortunately they were held up in stage 2 by a slower car ahead, the crew not seeing Mitchell & Turbull, so they were forced to follow at a reduced pace for quite a distance. They were then 3 seconds slower than the charging Hughes on stage 3 but still came into service as the leading ST crew.

Third crew away were the Irish crew of David Kelly & Gerry Hughes. David had been doing some testing to gain experience of gravel and the car, this being only Kelly's second forest event, however David is no slouch in his native Ireland on the tarmac so only time will tell until he is up to speed on the gravel.
They were quick out of the blocks and were only hampered on stage 1 went they caught a slower car but on the short stage this didn't cause too many problems and they matched Zak & Tom's time. A clean run through the treacherous stage 2 with a joint fastest time with Mitchell saw them 2nd overall heading to stage 3, Greystoke. With Mitchell & Hughes battling hard now, Kelly dropped some time over the 6.5 mile M-Sport test track, maybe the lack of gravel experience the cause, but lying in 3rd place at service was something to be very pleased with.

Elliott Stafford & Lewis Sim wanted to make up for their troubled first round so headed into the first group of stages with high hopes, however, a rear puncture on stage 2 slowed them slightly & trouble with the car starting caused them a few worries. They kept going and a clean run through Greystoke stopping the clock just 1 second behind Kelly saw them go into service in 4th place just over a minute down on the leaders.

Steven Ormond-Smith had made the trip over from the Isle Of Man, this was his first showing in the championship, unfortunately missing the first round due to work commitments. Like Kelly, he was more used to tarmac so the early slushy conditions were going to be a big eye opener for the Manx man. With Max Freeman calling the notes they kept their noses clean through the first 3 stages and came into service in 5th place with no problems to report.

Wesley Gilford returned to the ST Trophy again this year, he is again the only registered competitor using the RF2.0 clubman version of the car. Wesley was joined by Mark Townson for this event and the crew had an early start with the RF cars running at the front of the field and in reverse order, Gilford & Townson actually being the 3rd car on the road so the conditions of the first 2 stages being extremely tricky. The crew made it to service but would retire on the road section out to stage 4 with an under powered engine & an electrical gremlin.

Four more stages greeted the crews before a second service back at Penrith. The first 2 short stages were identical and the crews looped round to repeat it which caused inevitable holds ups. Hughes dug deep and pushed hard through stage 4 beating Mitchell by 12 seconds and taking the lead. Stafford had a good run and was only 1 second behind Mitchell, Bobby confessing he had been caught napping after the long delay. Kelly started to suffer with a misfire and the car finally crying enough after the stage with an upset coil pack. Ormond-Smith was continuing to gain experience and kept heading in the right direction, now up to 4th with Stafford being promoted to 3rd with the demise of Kelly.
After stage 5 the crews headed to the longest stage of the day, the 12 mile Grizedale. With Hughes & Wood holding a 17 second lead over Mitchell & Turnbull they had a little bit of breathing space. Hughes again topped the time sheets but only 1 second quicker than Mitchell who had now woken up! Mitchell admitting he was going to have to settle for 2nd again if Hughes kept up his current speed. Sadly the fight wouldn't continue as Bobby found a leaking fuel rail at service 2 so was forced to retire. Steven Ormond-Smith was given a notional time and was shown as 3rd quickest through the stage with Stafford having a nightmare with punctures which then caused him to retire on the road section back to service.
Only two crews tackled the final stage back at Greystoke. Zak Hughes & Steven Ormond-Smith. They then headed the short distance back to the finish ramp at Penrith. Hughes & Wood overjoyed with their 2nd win of the season and impressively they had also come home 2nd overall in the BTRDA silverstar category for 2WD cars. Ormond-Smith & Freeman ware pleased to bag valuable points for the championship and gain experience on the gravel.

The next round is the Rallynuts stages in April. Keep up to date with all ST Trophy info on our facebook page and on twitter & instagram.
The event was also round 1 of the BRC so the organisers had put on a spectacle which included town centre servicing for the crews.

Bobby Mitchell & Shannon Turnbull led the crews away and immediately struggled with brake issues in the first couple of stages. Not knowing if it was the car or the conditions causing the issues. Their plan coming into the event had been to push hard from the word go, but with the brake issues they opted for a more conservative approach but still arrived at the Llandudno town centre service with a 7 second lead.
Zak Hughes & Tom Wood returned to the ST Trophy for a second season. Last year they were always setting the pace but a catalogue of mechanical woes put them out of any championship contention. With a fully refreshed car they headed out to the stages in a confident mood but like Bobby they suffered brake issues in the slippery opening stages. After Zak realised he had been turning the bias valve the wrong way he managed to settle into a nice rhythm and topped the time sheets on a couple of stages and were looking forward to a battle with Mitchell & Turnbull in the afternoon.

David Kelly & Kenny Bustard had made the long trek over from Ireland, arriving just in time to get the car passed through scrutiny. This was to be David's first time on the gravel, only ever doing asphalt events over on the emerald isle. The first couple of stages were taken with caution but they soon settled into a good pace and reported no issues at service and in a comfortable 5th place.

Rhydian Price was another returnee to the championship, he had the world famous Steven 'Doc' Brown in the passenger seat, the pair had teamed up last year in the Welsh championship to good effect. Sadly their first event back wasn't going to bare the fruit they had wished for, a spin on stage 1 with a costly three point turn followed by a snapped shaft on stage 3 which sidelined the likeable duo.
Matt Baddeley had Phil Kenny on the notes, Phil is a regular co-driver in the ST championship so Matt was in good hand. The plan for the event was to get miles under their belt and get used to the new car. With no issues at service they were happy with their progress and they were in 6th place.

Will Corey & Brynmor Pierce set a good pace from the word go, Will actually driving Brynmor's car so a little pressure on to make sure the car stayed in one piece. Will was settling in nicely to the car and was at the sharp end of the leader board through the morning loop coming into service in 3rd place.

Elliott Stafford & Lewis Sim, another new pair to the championship were on a learning curve, getting to know the car and the stages. They were struggling with overheating issues at first service, the mechanics stripping the front of the car trying to solve the issue. They were laying in 4th place at this point.

6 cars set pout from service to tackle the remaining 4 stages. Bobby still led after stage 4 but Hughes had been pushing hard and Mitchell's lead was now less than a second. Corry was still in 3rd and was happy with his pace, Stafford had started to have gearbox issues and the car was still struggling with the overheating issue and had begun to cut out so he was overhauled by Kelly.
Stage 5 was a disaster for the leading crew of Mitchell & Turnbull. They started the stage on a rapidly deflating rear tyre. Having been told on the start line that they had to change it in the stage the crew took a tactical decision to run the 4 miles on the flat hoping to lose less time than stopping to change. They then suffered a 2nd rear puncture and had to limp through in a very sideways style.
Zak & Tom had seen Bobby set off with the soft tyre and they knew the Scottish crew would struggle so suddenly the pressure was off. They knew just a clean run through the final stages would give them victory.
Will & Brynmor had closed the gap to 2nd place with Bobby's puncture problems and were only 6 seconds behind going into the last stage, Mitchell now out of tyres was going to have to play it cool to keep the 2nd place.
Stage 6 would be the last we would see of Stafford & Sim, the car causing too many issues to continue. Kelly now in 4th & Baddeley in 5th were having trouble free runs just getting used to their new cars, Kelly, with no lamp pod was a little nervous of the diminishing light going into the final stage but all was good.

Zak Hughes & Tom Wood returned to the finish ramp on Mostyn St in Llandudno in 1st place, Bobby Mitchell & Shannon Turnbull held on to a well deserved 2nd place with Will Corry & Brynmor Pierce taking 3rd place after a clean run.

The crews make their way to the Lake District next for the Malcolm Wilson Rally on 9th March. To keep up to date with everything ST Trophy find us on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
The event is held in the famously fast Yorkshire forests to the west of Scarborough and with most places in the ST Trophy decided only 4 crews entered the event.
The championship had come down to a 2 horse race between James Giddings and Ewan Tindall. James had led the championship since the 2nd round and Ewan had shot to the top ranks in a short space of time, only joining the championship at the mid point after his 17th Birthday.

Sadly for Ewan a gearbox issue he picked up on the last round, The Woodpecker Rally, had left him struggling to effect repairs in time for the Trackrod so he and codriver, Paul Hudson, had to sit on the side lines which meant James & Sion were crowned ST Trophy champions before they even started the first stage.

The morning of the event was dry and sunny albeit very cold, frost has been reported in the early stages so a little caution was needed.
Newcomer to the championship Bobby Mitchell was first of the ST's away. Bobby, a former M-Sport ST Trophy competitor from 2007 had decided to dip his toe into the last round of the championship and get a feel for the competition with a chance he may return next season. He set a fast pace into the first stage in his new car but half way through the stage go caught out on a notorious corner and left the road at high speed, luckily the car sustaining no damage but the steering wheel had hit his hand. He put in a push on stage 2 and was quickest ST through the 6 miles of Gale Rigg showing his speed of the past. His hand was still giving him grief which had now swollen badly as they arrived at the first service.
James Giddings & Sion Cunniff were next away, with the championship sewn up you would expect the welsh crew to play it safe but no, they topped the time sheets in Cropton making their mark on this rally as they had done on the championship. Stage 2 saw them match times with Tordoff and head back to service with a 9 second overall lead.
Mat & Tim Tordoff were the third crew into the stages, Mat & Tim had been pretty consistent all year and this had paid off with them taking 2nd overall in the championship, helped a little by Ewan Tindall & Paul Hudson's no show at this event. Mat had a moment on Stage 1, overshooting a corner over a crest, no damage was done and matching Giddings in Stage 2 showed them in 2nd place at Service 1, just 9 seconds behind Giddings & Cunniff.
The fourth crew away were the local crew of Neil Fewlass & Steven Varey. Both crew members had cut their teeth in these stages in the past but sadly that was pre pacenotes and probably pre colour television! The crew had used descriptive notes all season but had struggled so decided to opt for the simpler number system for the final round, Steven finding it a lot easier to get the information out. They had a clean run through the first couple of stages and were happy to be back out after their harvest lay off.

The third stage was 10 miles of Dalby, the stage is not to everyone's taste as it has long straights and square corners and is definitely not suited for the ST's but the crews all made it safely through and back to service 2. Bobby Mitchell & Sam Coleman were the fastest through with Mat Tordoff having a push and stopping the clock just 7 seconds behind Mitchell and 7 seconds ahead of champion Giddings. Fewlass was 4th and getting used to the new notes.

The final 20 miles of the event were in the classic Yorkshire stages of Staindale & Langdale, both stages suiting the ST's. Giddings hit the top of the time sheets again in Staindale, just piping Mitchell by 3 seconds with the charging Tordoffs a further 3 seconds behind Mitchell. The crews then headed into the longest stage, Langdale with James & Sion holding just a 7 second lead over Mat & Tim so it was going to be a last stage showdown between the two season regulars.
Giggings pushed hard and managed to keep the Tordoff's behind and finished the stage 3 seconds quicker giving them the overall event win. Mat & Tim took a well deserved second and despite topping the time sheets on the final stage Bobby & Sam took 3rd place. Their stage 1 excursion obviously making their overall result suffer. Sadly Neil & Steven snapped the gear selector and had to drive most of the 13 miles of Langdale and the road section back to Filey stuck in 3rd gear!

The crews lined up on the sunny promenade in Filey for the traditional champagne spraying and this brought the 2018 ST Trophy to a climax.

James & Sion were officially announced as the champions of the 2018 MRF ST Trophy and win the use of the Castrol R2 on the 2019 BTRDA R2 Rallye Cup

2nd place goes to Mat & Tim Tordoff. They win a free entry into WRGB National and the use of the Castrol R2 car.

3rd place goes to Ewan Tindall & Paul Hudson who win a test in the Castrol R2 in 2019

The final points standing for the Championship are on the side margin of the website home page.

It has again been a close fought championship, this year coming down to the final round. We would like to thank all of the competitors for making it such a competitive and fun championship.
Thanks must go out to the championship sponsors, MRF Tyres, Castrol, Mintex, REIS insurance & TORQ racewear.

Details of the 2019 ST Trophy will be announced soon.
The Woodpecker rally saw seven crews making their way to Ludlow for the sixth round of the MRF ST Trophy

Six m-sport cars and one RF class car started from the race course and with 7 good quality stages ahead it was going to be a great battle.

Zak Hughes took the lead with a stage 1 time of 6.41, Kalvin Green was 11 seconds behind him with Ewan Tindall matching Green's time. James Giddings was a further 2 seconds behind them and Mat Tordoff a further 2 seconds behind James. In 6th place and getting to grips with her new steed was newcomer Emily Retallick. Emily, a former Rally First front runner, was making her rallying return after an 18 month lay off and was expected to go well. Wesley was in 7th place in the RF spec car.

Zak topped the time sheets again on Stage 2 leaving the rest of the crews needing to dig deep if they wanted to catch him.

Stage 3 saw Zak take a stunning stage time 22 seconds faster than his rivals, Zak now had a lead of 40 seconds going into service and only 16 seconds covered the next three cars.

The famous Haye Park was the 4th Stage and again Hughes lead the ST's with a fastest time,Giddings was close on his heals with a quick time & Tindall was finding his rhythm too.

Sadly Kalvin Green ground to a halt on this stage with a mechanical issue. Emily was now starting to increase her pace as she was getting used to the new car and her confidence grew with each mile. Wesley was now 6th, his main competition coming from the other BTRDA rally first runners.

The crews now headed back to service at the Ludlow Race Course, all crews seemed happy and had no issues to report. The new improved MRF tyre was holding up well with all the crews happy with their performance.

The crews set out for the final 3 stages. Ewan took his first stage win of the day in Stage 5 just 1 second ahead of Zak & James who tied on times. Mat had a good run and was only a further 3 seconds down.

Zak again topped the ST's times in Stage 6. Ewan had kept us his pace and moved into 2nd ahead of James in third place making for an interesting final stage.

The battle between Ewan and James over the next 5.5 miles of Stage 7 was going to be interesting, Giddings set fastest ST time ahead of Zak. Ewan finally losing out to James by the slimmest of margins, 1 second in fact, thanks in part Tindall being held up by another competitor mid-stage. Mat Tordoff snapped a shaft in the final stage but managed to limp out of the stage to continue.

So the top three leaving the final stage was Hughes, Giddings and Tindall.

Disaster then struck for Zak on the road section back to the finish with his car cutting out and failing top re-start. Sadly the crew, despite working frantically to find the fault, ran out of their allotted time and retired from the event. Rallying can be a cruel sport at times! A simple earth wire was located as the issue by the team back in the workshop.
Zak's retirement promoted everyone up a place so Giddings & Cunniff took top honours with Tindall & Hudson only 1 second behind in 2nd place. Retallick took a well deserved 3rd place on her debut in the series, improving as the day had gone on.

So the final results are:

1st James Giddings and Sion Cunniff

2nd Ewan Tindall and Paul Hudson

3rd Emily and Eliot Retallick

4th Mat and Tim Tordoff

5th Wesley Gilford and Mark Townson

The final round is the Trackrod Rally in the fast Yorkshire forests and the championship is still all to play for so it will be an exciting showdown for sure.

The previous few weeks had been sunny, hot & dry and despite a heavy shower on Friday lunchtime the stages were still going to be dry and dusty.

Zak Hughes & Tom Wood led the field away and into the first stage. This was a new stage for the event and Zak threw caution, literally, to the wind over a crest and topped the leader board at the flying finish, as well as achieving a new high jump record for a Fiesta ST in Wales.
James Gddings & Sion Cuniff matched times with Ewan Tindall & Paul Hudson over the opening 5 miles with Kalvin Green & Osian Owen just 6 seconds behind. Mat & Tim Tordoff were in 5th with Martin Laverty & Phil Kenny rounding off the Trophy crews.
The pace stayed tight at the top over the next couple of stages with the top 4 behind split by only a handful of seconds.
Mat & Tim Tordoff suffered a puncture in Stage 3 and dropped some time but were determined to push on in the afternoon to claw back the lost minutes.
Green & Owen had upped their pace and were getting closer to Tindall & Hudson, the gap only 2 seconds after stage 3 and with Tindall only 6 seconds adrift of Giddings in 3rd who was 6 seconds shy of the leading Hughes it was going to be an epic fight for honours ahead.

Sadly the stage 4 start line was as far as the popular crew of Laverty & Kenny were going to get, a snapped shaft grinding their event to a halt.

The five remaining crews came into service back at the Royal Welsh Showground, all having enjoyed the close battle a one make series brings, the stages were fast and in good condition so it was all to play for in the afternoon loop.

Zak kept pushing hard and despite suffering a little front end damage was still leading the way. James started the afternoon stages 5 seconds behind but dropped a couple of second over the next 2 stages until disaster struck in Halfway 2 when they suffered a puncture. The crew tried to push on but under steered off the stage and hit a rock ending their rally. Ewan had been dropping a few seconds each stage to the 2 crews ahead but seeing the stricken Giddings on Stage 7 they knew they just needed to keep their noses clean for the final 2 stages for a podium position. Another crew to drop by the way side was Green & Owen, a fuel issue after stage 7 making them the 3rd ST on the retirement list.
Mat & Tim Tordoff's day went from bad to worse, they were trying to claw back some of the lost time with the puncture when they lost their power steering after a heavy impact, Mat needing to manhandle the car through the final 2 stages, but having seen the retirements around him knew he had to dig deep and struggle on for some important championship points.

The final 3 crews made it back to the ceremonial finish on the banks of the river Wye with Zak Hughes & Tom Wood getting to spray the Champagne in 1st place. Ewan Tindall & Paul Hudson took the 2nd spot and the Tordoff's managed to nurse their car home to a well deserved 3rd.

James Giddings still leads the championship with Mathew Tordoff only 3 points behind. 9 points adrift is Zak and with Kalvin only 2 points behind in 4th and Ewan Tindall only 2 points behind that in 5th it is still all to play for over the next 2 rounds.

The championship now has a short summer break before the excitement continues in Ludlow for the Woodpecker Stages on 1st September.
The event was based at the popular H&H Auction Mart in Carlisle just off the M6. The 5 special stages lay 30 miles to the north east in the Kielder complex. The weather had been good leading up to the Rally so dust could be an issue on some stages.
The first loop of stages before service seemed to be cutting up badly and all crews reported how rough it was with lots of loose rocks on the stage surface. Several crews arrived back to Carlisle having suffered punctures and this theme was to continue throughout the day.
Steven Brown & Russell Fair were the first casualties retiring on Stage 2 after clipping a rock and a gatepost and damaging the front suspension. Brown had complained about an ill handling car up to that point.
Wesley Gilford and Sam Colman sadly found one of the deep Kielder ditches in the Kershope stage. There had been a torrential down pour mid way through the stage and the surface had become so slippery according to the new crew.
Kalvin Green & Rhys Stoneman also retired on the Kershope stage with mechanical issues.

The rest of the crews battled on through the rain and the rough conditions to make it back to the finish in Carlisle with Ewan Tindall & Paul Hudson topping the time sheets, this being only Ewan's second forest rally making the result that much more impressive. It's clear Ewan is going to be one to watch in the future.
Mat & Tim Tordoff's controlled drive paid off with 2nd place and Zak Hughes & Tom Wood rounded off the top 3 after a fraught day.

The crews head to mid wales again for the next round, The NG stages, on July 14th.
There had been some rain on the lead up to the event but the sun had managed to show itself for the Saturday, even resulting in dusty conditions as the day progressed.
8 Stages lay ahead of the crews in the classic Dyfnant & Gartheiniog forests.

Zak Hughes & Tom Wood led the crews away, Zak had fitted a new engine after his incident with a log pile on the Severn Valley Stages. Following crews had reported seeing smoke from the car early on and sadly for Zak & Tom the new engine cried enough during stage 2 so their rally ended with an early bath.

James Giddings & Sion Cunniff were next away at set the early pace, pushing hard to arrive at service after stage 4 with a 13 second lead over Martin Laverty. Unfortunately some mileage had been lost due to a bad accident on Stage 3.

Kalvin Green & Osian Owen were third Fiesta away and despite their best efforts were off the pace in the opening stages arriving at service in 6th place and needing to gather their thoughts ready for a much needed attack of the afternoon stages.

Mat & Tim Tordoff were next into the stages and were gaining more and more confidence in the new car with each mile. Mat had a steady first stage but then increased the pace and they arrived at mid point service still holding 3rd place and only 1 second behind 2nd place Laverty.

Martin Laverty & Phil Kenny seemed to have left their bad luck behind them and were rewarded with 2nd quickest time on the opening Dyfnant stage. They kept up the pace and arrived at service in 2nd place 13 seconds down on Giddings but with Tordoff only 1 second behind them it was going to be an interesting afternoon.

Ewan Tindall & Paul Hudson were the next away, a new crew to the Championship, Ewan only having past his driving test 2 weeks before the event. Ewan & Paul had moved up from the Junior leagues and this was to be Ewan's first outing in the forests and gravel. Luckily for Ewan, Paul Hudson has plenty of experience and would be a good guide for the youngster. This mix of young and old experience seemed to be paying off and the crew settled in to a quick pace which was getting quicker with each mile, arriving at service in 4th place but with only 4 seconds up to Laverty in 2nd they had a chance of a podium in their sights.

Final ST crew over the start ramp were straight talking Yorkshire crew of Neil Fewlass & Stephen Varey. Neil still getting used to left hand drive and front wheel drive. Neil & Steve arrived at the service halt in 6th pace 29 seconds behind Kalvin Green with just one thing on their mind, eurovision!

The crews all attacked the afternoon stages which was a re-run of the morning loop and despite a hold up all the mileage was there for them to fight it out. Green & Owen went on a rampage, throwing caution to the wind and aiming their sights high they managed to claw their way back up the leader board and with a bit of luck overhauled the leaders to come home as victors taking some well earned Championship points.
Giddings & Cunniff were comfortably leading until their gearbox mounting broke, they stopped on a road section and strapped the engine up, sensibly dropped their pace in the remaining stages to make sure they got to the finish. Their lowered pace handed the victory to Kalvin & Osian but they fought to the end finishing only 7 seconds behind but took valuable points with their 2nd place overall.
Ewan & Paul had settled into a good rhythm and kept upping their pace stage by stage to slowly move up the leader board, with veteran Hudson on the notes and keeping Tindall in check they came home with a very respectable 3rd overall just 5 seconds adrift of second place Giddings.
Martin Laverty & Phil Kenny had slowly slid down the leader board as the afternoon went on and came back to Welshpool in 4th place just 2 seconds ahead of Mat & Tim Tordoff, the 2 crews had been within a hand full of seconds all day.
Fewlass & Varey came home in 6th place and with more experience under their belts will be hoping to improve on the next round. Sadly with the late finish of the event Neil had to miss The Eurovision Song Contest!

The Championship moves to the fast stages of Kielder for the Carlisle Stages on June 9th.
This was a new event for the series but the popular stages were in good condition and the crews were looking forward to a high speed event. The sun was shining and air and ground temp was high so the wet stages after the recent rain were drying nicely.
As Championship leaders Zak Hughes & Tom Wood led the field away from the events Builth Wells base. They struggled through the first few stages with an intercom issue and also reported tricky conditions in the opening stage only managing 3rd fastest in the ST's.
James Giddings & Sion Cunniff were next on the road and with no problems settled immediately into a good pace topping the stage times after the first pass of Crychan.
Kalvin Green & Osian Owen were also on the pace from the word go and set a respectable time on the opener, only 4 seconds behind the leader Giddings although Hughes was only 3 seconds behind them.
Fourth away of the Championship registered ST's was Martin Laverty & Phil Kenny. Martin and Phil were hoping for better luck than on round 1 after gearbox and power steering issues but sadly lady luck passed them by again and they suffered a front wheel puncture in the long opening stage so were forced to stop and change to avoid damaging the car. This dropped the crew to the bottom of the ST time sheets.
Fifth on the road and holding a comfortable 4th place in the standings after Stage 1 was father and son team Matt & Tim Tordoff. They had moved up to an M-Sport car this season after several outings in the Club spec ST last year. Unfortunately they had retired early on in Round 1 so this event was the beginning of their learning curve and the plan was to get those all important miles under their belt.
Neil Fewless & Stephen Varey were next on the road and were making their rallying return after a lay off, Neil having previously competed in bigger cars such as Mitsubishi's, Toyota's, Cosworth's and Mk2 Escorts. The crew chose the ST Trophy for their return as a cost effective championship, however Fewles had never driven FWD or LHD so SS1 was an definite eye opener and their inexperience of the car and pacenotes showed in their stage times.
Wesley Gilford & Ryan Griffiths rounded off the field in their Club spec ST. This was Wesley's first ever rally in his new car, the ex John Goff machine. They took it steady through the first few stages getting used to this new experience, Gilford only ever having done Stock car Racing 20 years ago. Luckily co-driver Ryan was not new to the sport so he was able to help Wesley with his experience and they headed to service in 6th place.

Zak managed to up the pace, even without an intercom and with Tom giving him hand signals instead of pacenotes they moved into the lead with a very slender 3 second over a still pushing Giddings. Green was 15 seconds behind in 3rd place with Tordoff settling in nicely 47 seconds further back. Fewlass & Varey were in 5th ahead of Gilford & Griffiths with Laverty & Kenny rounding off the crews in 7th after their time consuming puncture.

The crews left service and headed out to the very popular Radnor stage followed by a second service. The positions were the same as they headed back out after service for a further loop of 3 stages.

Drama hit Zak & Tom on the second run through Crychan, hitting a log pile which holed the radiator and damaged the gear linkage. They continued to the end of the stage but were forced to retire on the road section to SS6 due to the damage. This left Giddings & Cunniff with a comfortable lead and they kept their nose clean and made it back to the Builth Wells showground as round 2 winners. Green & Owen came home in 2nd place just under a minute behind the leaders with The Tordoffs a minute and a half behind to round off the podium positions in 3rd. Neil & Stephen came home a respectable 4th after their long lay off from rallying with Martin Laverty having to push all afternoon after his morning puncture woes to overhaul Wesley & Griffiths for 5th. Gilford coming home in 6th in the club spec car and was very happy with his first experience of rallying.

The next round is the Plains Rally in Welshpool on 12th May 2018
Richard Wells & Calvin Houldsworth lead the field away hoping to improve on their bad fortunes of 2017. They initially set the pace but newcomer Zak Hughes & Tom Wood, who had stepped up from the Suzuki Swift for 2018, settled into the Fiesta ST and started to match the pace of Wells. Also pushing hard were another new crew Kalvin Green & Osian Owen who had settled into 3rd place with a slender gap down to 4th over James Giddings & Sion Cunniff. Giddings had lost his front bumper in the opening stage and it still remains a mystery as to how!
Returning contenders Matt & Tim Tordoff sadly had an off in stage 1 which didn't cause too much damage but unfortunately took them OTL and into retirement.
Another 2017 crew who had returned for a second year in 2018 were Martin Laverty & Phil Kenny. Sadly the popular Irish driver suffered a puncture and then lost 2nd gear followed by power steering issues so decided to call it a day and retired at service not wanting to cause further damage to the car. Brynmor Pierce & Alan Jones, another new crew to the championship using the ex Guy Butler 'sheep machine' were another crew to retire in stage 1 when they lost a wheel in a particularly rough section!
The remaining crews made their way to the service halt at the North Wales Surf Centre near Betws-y-coed.
The afternoon stages didn't prove any easier for the ST Trophy crews. Wells & Houldsworth retired form the lead with a broken driveshaft which left Hughes & Wood with a comfortable lead.
James Giddings and Sion Cunniff found some new pace and managed to overhaul Green & Owen to take 2nd place and held that position the remaining stages.
There was drama in the final stage when Zak Hughes snapped a driveshaft. The crew managed to limp the car out of the stage and effected repairs on the road section back to Llandudno. Luckily for them the time buffer to Giddings & Cunniff in 2nd was enough and they took the opening round victory.

The 2nd round of the Championship, The Malcolm Wilson Rally, has been postponed due to the adverse weather so the next round will be the Rally Nuts stages on 14th April.
an ST driver to step up to, in the higher spec R2 car. Tim Kirvan-Rodgers

however the cost to take that step is quite a big jump and not within everyone’s
